Markaviest Bryant is one of the top-rated weak-side defensive ends in the class of 2017.
In January, the Crisp County (Cordele, Ga.) four-star (247) visited Clemson for the Tigers’ first Junior Day event of the year.
Bryant (6-5, 230) recently spoke with TheClemsonInsider about the visit and where things stand with his recruitment.
“You weren’t going to leave there without knowing everything about Clemson — that’s one thing I liked about it,” he said. “If you didn’t know something, by the end of the day, you were going to know it…I found out so many things about Clemson it was crazy. It was like, I didn’t know this, I didn’t know this, I didn’t know this. I didn’t know it was a military school — things like that.
“And the coaches, coach (Marion) Hobby, I talked with him from time to time. The one that’s recruiting me, the area recruiter, is the offensive line coach (Robbie Caldwell), he’s recruiting me hard. I really like the coaches and I talked to the head coach, Dabo Swinney.
“I talked to him 1-on-1 and I talked to the defensive coordinator, Brent Venables. At lunch, he told me pretty much everything that goes on the defense — how I would play on the defense, how I would fit in — things like that, so I really enjoyed that.”
Clemson hosted him in the fall for the Florida State game.
“It was crazy. That was crazy. The atmosphere was crazy,” Bryant said.
Along with Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee have offered.
Bryant, who said he’s wide-open and has no favorites, wants to decide at some point during his senior year. The decision could stretch all the way until Signing Day.
“Some team might just stand out to me, make me feel at home and know that’s where I want to be. Until then, I’m really open,” Bryant said.
He added, “I tell everybody that my coach is apart of my recruiting. He’s been doing it for so long. He knows what’s best. At the same time, he tells me to do what I feel is best.”
Along with the Junior Day trip to Clemson, Bryant has also been to Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina in 2016.
As a junior, he had 73 tackles and 10 sacks.
