Instant Replay: Clemson 6, Boston College 2

The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 19 Clemson’s 6-2 win over No. 22 Boston College on Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson.

What happened?

The Tigers (14-3, 3-1 ACC) took the first lead of the game in the second on back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Andrew Cox and Adam Renwick. The Eagles answered in the next inning with two solo homers to tie the game at 2-2. Clemson responded in the bottom of the frame as Seth Beer launched a two-run homer over the Cajun Café to go up 4-2. Weston Wilson doubled the lead in the fifth as ripped a two-run shot into the Chapman Grandstands to give the Tigers a 6-2 advantage. Clate Schmidt, who had a career-high 11 strikeouts, and Pat Krall would combine to do the rest as Clemson took a 1-0 lead in the weekend series.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the third, Chris Okey hit a one-out single and Beer followed with what appeared to be a double down the first base line but was called foul. Instead Beer followed with his homer that gave the Tigers the lead for good. Boston College (12-4, 2-2 ACC) tried to answer in the fourth by loading the bases with only one out but Schmidt had two straight strikeouts to end the threat.

What went right?

Schmidt was outstanding in his first Friday night start, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Krall finished the game with three strikeouts in the final two frames. Okey and Beer each had two hits to pace Clemson’s nine-hit attack and the Tigers did not commit an error defensively.

What went wrong?

The Tigers played a pretty solid game against the Eagles, but did hit into two double plays during the contest.
