It’s not often you hear a head football coach talk about how his team has come together in the spring. After all, it’s the spring. This is the time of the year when the team just starts to learn about one another.

But the 2016 edition of the Clemson Tigers appear, at least from Dabo Swinney’s perspective, different from the other seven teams he has had at Clemson, including last year’s 14-1 squad that came within one play of winning the national championship.

“Every year you start over and the chemistry and the leadership is a big part in trying to get the team ready to play,” he said. “You never really know. Sometimes, it takes a little longer with some teams than others. Sometimes guys don’t quite take the leadership aspect of it as quick as others. Sometimes it doesn’t mesh as quick.

“A couple of years ago we had a couple of chemistry issues up front. But this group, they like each other and I think it has come together very well.”

The Tigers are meshing and Swinney says through seven practices, this year’s team is right where it needs to be.

“I think these guys have brought a sincere work ethic. The chemistry of this team has been really special,” the Clemson coach said. “From opening day, from mat drills and starting over, it’s been really, really good. There is just a lot of ownership and camaraderie. I’m encouraged. I’m really encouraged.”
