Four-star ATH likes Clemson

BUFORD, Ga. – Cornerback or Wide receiver? Four-star athlete Malcolm Askew could play either one at the next level.

On Sunday, during The Opening regional camp in Atlanta, Askew (5-10, 175) split time between the two positions.

“At the next level, I’ll be a DB, because there’s longevity there. I can survive more on the defensive side than the offense, instead of taking all those hits,” he told TheClemsonInsider, before the camp.

That’s good news for Clemson, because the Tigers are recruiting Askew (McCalla, Ala.) as a cornerback.

Defensive coordinator Brent Venables, defensive ends coach/recruiter of record Marion Hobby and defensive backs coach Mike Reed are all in touch with him.

“They need me. They want me in that backfield. They want me to be another Mackensie Alexander, come in and be a lock-down corner,” Askew said.

Clemson is counted among his favorites.

“They’ve got a lot of Alabama ties. I have a great relationship with coach Dabo (Swinney),” Askew said. “He’s a great coach and he’s got a great thing going.”

The family vibe offers plenty of appeal.

“Anytime you come in, they’re going to treat you like you’re their son — that’s what I like about it,” Askew said. “Every coach can be like a dad to me and that’s just a great thing about it.”

Auburn has the edge, but Clemson has as strong a shot as anyone else.

“I know two schools that will be in that are Ole Miss and Clemson — they’ll be in that top five,” Askew said. “I’ll get the other two as I figure everything out.”

A final decision is expected to be made at some point between August and October.

“I’ll be enrolling early, so that will kind of get everything out of the way, so I can focus on my senior season, and that way I can get those transcripts over — that way, I’ll know which school I’m going to,” Askew said.
