Clemson head Dabo Swinney says he wants to see 50,000 fans in Death Valley when the Tigers host their annual Orange & White Spring Game on April 9.
“If we can have 30,000 people show up for a pizza party we ought to have at least 50,000 show up for a spring game,” he said.
Swinney also used the possibility of this being Deshaun Watson’s last spring game of his Clemson career as extra incentive. Of course, it’s his first and his last. Watson did not play in either of the previous two spring games due to injury. He sat out last year as he recovered from his torn ACL and in 2014 he missed the game after suffering a shoulder injury.
“There are a lot of new guys, new faces so I really want to challenge our fan base to come and enjoy a great day in Clemson,” Swinney said. “The game is going to be at 2:30 and it is going to be a big recruiting day for us as well so hopefully we will have a great, great crowd and really start this season off the right way.
“We are going to win too. We are definitely going to win.”
Swinney knows this could be Watson’s last spring at Clemson because they have already talked about his future plans once the 2016 season is complete. Watson is scheduled to graduate in December, which will mean he will graduate in just three years.
“Deshaun came in here with a plan,” Swinney said. “He is going to graduate in three years and that’s what he is doing … It is great when you have focused people like that.”
Swinney says Watson will be a high draft prospect after next season so he understands he might not have the Davey O’Brien and Manning Award winner available in 2017.
“There are a lot of teams that would like to have him this year, let me promise you,” Swinney said. “He’s game translate to whatever. If you want to play football on Mars, he’ll translate there. He is unbelievable.”
