Instant Replay: Clemson 12, Georgia 0

The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 22 Clemson’s 12-0 win over Georgia on Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

It marked Clemson’s first shutout over Georgia at Clemson since April 6, 1977 – a 2-0 win. It was also the first time the Tigers shutout the Bulldogs by 12 or more runs since a 23-0 victory on April 5, 1946.

What happened?

The Tigers (25-12) scored early and often against the Bulldogs (20-18). Clemson plated five runs on five hits in the first inning, highlighted by back-to-back two-run doubles from Reed Rohlman and Chris Williams. A Seth Beer RBI single in the second extended the lead to 6-0. The Tigers added four runs courtesy of a grand slam off the bat of Chris Okey in the fourth to make it 10-0. Clemson added its final two runs in the fifth as Beer hit a two-run single to make the final count 12-0 Tigers.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the first inning as Clemson scored five runs on five hits to run out to an early lead while Georgia was able to only collect three hits in the entire contest.

What went right?

Pretty much everything! Seven starters collected a hit and eight of the nine starters scored a run. Okey had a game-high five RBI while Beer added three RBI. Gilliam had a quality start, allowing a hit in 5.0 innings. Four relievers (Alex Schnell, Clate Schmidt, Alex Bostic, and Patrick Andrews) each tossed a scoreless inning to highlight the midweek shutout.

What went wrong?

On a night where you beat a major opponent 12-0, it’s hard to find anything wrong. The Tigers did commit an error and walk two batters, but outside of that it was one of Clemson’s best games of the season.
