Instant Replay: Ga. Southern, 7 Clemson 6

The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 23 Clemson’s loss to Georgia Southern on Saturday night at J.I. Clements Stadium.

What happened?

The Tigers (33-18) jumped to a quick lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer from Seth Beer. The Eagles (31-21) answered right back with a two-run homer of their own in the bottom of the frame. Clemson regained the lead in the third thanks to a sac fly from Chris Okey, RBI double from Reed Rohlman, and RBI single by Eli White. Again, Georgia Southern answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. The Tigers would go ahead 6-5 in the sixth on a two-out RBI single from Andrew Cox. The Eagles would win the game in the ninth with two runs to set up a rubber match on Sunday.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the final inning. With Clemson leading 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Georgia Southern had runners on the corners with two outs. Reliever Alex Eubanks got the batter to strike out, but a passed ball allowed him to reach base and the tying run to come in. Two batters later, the Eagles would pick up the walk off win with a bases loaded single.

What went right?

Beer had a game-high three hits to pace Clemson’s seven hit attack. Starter Pat Krall pitched well, allowing five runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts.

What went wrong?

The Tigers struggled to string hits together as they only had one hits in the six innings they did not score (as opposed to six hits in the three scoring innings). Eubanks took a tough luck loss as both runs scored in the ninth were unearned.
