Adapting to a new position is not that easy but for Clemson defensive back Ryan Carter it hasn’t been a problem. Carter proved his versatility at both the cornerback and safety positions during spring practice.
At 5-foot-9, 175 pounds, the defensive back has really impressed the coaches by adapting.
“It is very pleasing to see that. He does not look like a fish out of water,” defensive coordinator Venables said.
The Clemson Insider went back to some of the interviews that were conducted this spring as defensive back Ryan Carter was able to answer some important questions regarding the upcoming season.
Q: Are there things you as a person or you as a unit need to do better than you did last year?
Carter: “As far as last year, I would say just studying film so we don’t have those types of bust that we did in the ACC championship game from myself and other players in the secondary. I feel like we just need to get in the film room and study our opponent before hand so we can see mistakes we need to correct. For myself, I would say the same thing, studying and paying attention to detail.”
Q: You are one of the most experienced players in the secondary. Do you feel like you have to take over that leadership role?
Carter: “Yes, definitely, as far guys who don’t have the experience and teaching them what they need to learn. Sometimes I need to pull guys to the side and tell them what they did wrong or what they might be doing right. Yes, I do feel like I am taking on a leadership role.”
Q: Are you okay with the decision to play the cornerback position?
Carter: “Yeah, I’m okay with it. It helps me work at my technique at corner. At corner, I can still see what the safeties are doing and what other guys are doing around me. It feels good to be a corner.”
Q: If you got into the season and were put in a situation where you need to go back to safety would you be able to make that transition?
Carter: “Yea, I feel like I would be able to make that transition. I have to make sure I am paying attention in the film room to every position in the secondary, so if something like that were to happen I could come in and fill it without there being any type of fall off from the one to the two at safety. “
Q: Do you feel like your skill set makes you a natural fit at safety if the time should come when they need you to play there?
Carter: “I feel like with my skill set I can definitely move around and be versatile but I just have to make sure I am paying attention to what the strong safety is doing in the film room and make sure I am paying attention to the little details that’s going on.”
