The Clemson Insider takes a look back at No. 18 Clemson’s, 6-2, win over Notre Dame on Saturday to complete the sweep in the three-game series at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ina.
What happened?
The Tigers (38-18, 16-14 ACC) jumped out to an early lead thanks to RBI singles from Seth Beer and Weston Wilson in the first inning. Clemson would double its lead in the third as Chris Okey launched his 12th homer of the year, a two-run shot, to make it 4-0. The Tigers added another two runs in the ninth as Chris Williams hit a two-run homer down the right field line to make it 6-0. The Irish (27-27, 11-17) would not go quietly in the ninth, as they scored two runs and had the tying run at the plate but Pat Krall came in from the bullpen to end the game and give Clemson the sweep.
Game-Changing Moment:
Despite the Tigers holding a lead the entire game, the game really changed in the ninth inning as Williams gave Clemson two key insurance runs before three Tiger relievers shut down a Notre Dame rally in the bottom of the frame.
What went right?
For the third straight day a Clemson starter was great, as Alex Eubanks tossed 7.0 scoreless innings on seven hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. Okey and Williams provided the big blasts as six different Tigers accounted for Clemson’s six hits.
What went wrong?
The Tigers were able to sweep the series despite being doubled up in the hit column (12-6). Clemson also had some nervous times in the ninth as they game ended with the tying run at the plate.
