When it comes to wide receiver Clemson has nothing to worry about. The Tigers are loaded at wide receiver with a talented group of players that will allow them to have, yet again, one of the most explosive offenses in the country.
Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott has been very pleased with with what he has seen from his talented group of wide receivers in preparation for the upcoming season.
The wide receiver coach told The Clemson Insider he noticed a lot of progression from some of the players, especially Mike Williams, who was out last season due to a neck injury.
The Clemson Insider went back to some of the interviews that were conducted this spring, and Scott was able to answer some important questions regarding the upcoming season.
With so much experience at wide receiver, does it make your job a little bit easier?
Scott: “No, I don’t think it makes it any easier. You know we are always trying to improve. You have your first line guys who are trying to get better. Artavis Scott has things he needs to work on, Mike Williams has been out for a year, Hunter Renfrow has plenty of things to work on, and then you have that next group of guys that really need to take that next step.”
What kind of progress have you seen from Trevion Thompson?
Scott: “He has been a lot better. These guys have been challenged a lot. It has been a big spring for him. He has had a lot of scrimmage opportunities. I have seen a lot of good things out of him. This is a big year for him and he been getting a lot of opportunities and reps. I like where he is headed but he is not there yet. He is headed in the right direction.”
How has Ray Ray McCloud progressed?
Scott: ” I have been pleased with what I have seen out of Ray Ray McCloud. He finally looks healthy. He is playing a lot faster. ”
How do you feel about where Mike Williams is?
Scott: “I feel good. I have watched and tried to see if there is anything wrong from his year off. The biggest thing was the first three or four practices he was out of breath a little bit. He has been trying to get back into that practice shape of going four or five reps in a row. I’m very pleased with where he is. He has made a ton of plays and it really looks like he is picking up where he left off last year.”
What have been your impressions of Hunter Renfrow going into the upcoming season?
Scott: “I think Hunter is just a guy who you can count on, very similar to how Adam Humphries was when he was on the field. If you really turn your back and start talking to somebody else you know he is going to do his job, be where he is suppose to be, and execute at a high level.”
