Southlake (Texas) Southlake Carroll 2018 linebacker Jacob Doddridge attended a handful of football camps at various schools this summer.
After camping at Northwestern, Clemson, Florida, Texas and Baylor, Doddridge said two of the stops stand out to him.
“I really enjoyed Baylor’s camp,” Doddridge told The Clemson Insider recently. “Florida and Texas were nice, but I would have to say Baylor and Clemson were my favorite camps this summer.”
Doddridge has connections to both Clemson and Baylor.
Doddridge’s dad, Jonathan, is a former Baylor baseball player.
Jonathan also played football against Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables in Kansas during the late 80s and early 90s. Jonathan was a linebacker at Salina Central High School while Venables was a linebacker at Salina South High.
“At Clemson we know coach Venables, and for Baylor we know (linebackers) coach (Jim) Gush and some Baylor writers,” Jacob said. “So, it was nice to know the coaches there.”
Jacob hasn’t had many opportunities to talk to Venables, but likes what he’s heard from him.
“We’ve only talked when I’ve been at Clemson,” Jacob said. “I think he’s a fantastic coach.”
Jacob participated in two of the three practice sessions at the Dabo Swinney Camp on June 8.
Jacob told TCI after the camp that he particularly liked learning more about the linebacker position from Venables and Clemson linebacker Ben Boulware.
“I enjoyed being around coach Venables,” Jacob said in June. “I enjoyed the one-on-ones, and it was neat that Boulware was there giving tips. I learned a lot of helpful things with my footwork and stance.”
Jacob, a physical player and hard worker, has received interest from Clemson, Baylor, Florida State, Kansas State, Northwestern and Texas Tech.
Which school is showing the most interest right now?
“Clemson sends me the most mail,” Jacob said.
Entering his junior season, there are a couple of goals Jacob hopes to attain.
“My goal this season is to be one of the leading tacklers on the team and receive offers,” he said.
As a sophomore in 2015, the 6-foot-3, 213-pounder recorded 41 tackles with two sacks, five quarterback hurries and a pass deflection.
