4-star talks future Clemson visit, leaders

Atanza Vongor, a four-star safety in the class of 2018 from Grand Prairie, Texas, received an offer from Clemson on May 6, and intends to visit Clemson down the road.

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Vongor to get the latest on his summer and recruitment.

“It’s been great,” Vongor said of his summer. “I’ve done a lot of training and getting guys from the team together to get some work in.”

Over the summer, Vongor enjoyed a trio of visits to Texas, TCU and Texas A&M.

“They were great,” Vongor said. “I had a great time at all those places. By the grace of God I should be taking more visits next year.”

Vongor is a teammate of five-star cornerback Jeffrey Okudah at South Grand Prairie High School. Clemson offered Okudah in April, and Vongor said the two could potentially make the trip to Clemson together at some point.

“I’m trying to go with Jeff when he goes,” Vongor said, “but if not, then I’ll just go with my family sometime.”

What does Vongor hope to get out of the eventual visit?

“I’m hoping to just get a feel of the program, campus and the atmosphere, meet with the coaches and see how I like it,” Vongor said.

Clemson defensive backs coach Mike Reed is Vongor’s main recruiter. Vongor and Reed haven’t talked in a while, Vongor said, but he likes Reed from the conversations they’ve had.

“He seems like a coach that keeps it real with his players,” Vongor said, “and helps them grow into top DBs.”

Right now, three schools are out in front for Vongor, though that is subject to change as he travels to more schools.

“Leaders right now are TCU, Texas, Texas A&M,” Vongor said. “Still have more visits to take, though.”

Vongor has offers from Alabama, Baylor, Clemson, Duke, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan, SMU, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M.

Vongor is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 26 player in Texas, the nation’s No. 19 safety and the nation’s No. 211 player overall.
