On Tuesday, after Clemson’s final practice of fall camp, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said his team is feeling a little “camp drunk.”
The good news for the Tigers is they’ll have a chance to “sober up” with classes beginning tomorrow — the team will have the day off, then transition into its next phase of preparation for the season, beginning with a final scrimmage on Thursday afternoon.
“Tough finish. Good camp,” Swinney said following practice. “We’ll kind of turn the script now and enter into the next phase of our preparation and process that we’re going through to get them ready to play.
“Really looking forward to it, to be honest with you. I’m so dang tired of looking at each other. I think we’re all a little camp drunk right now. We’re ready for a little shift of gears.”
Instead of focusing solely on football every day like they have the past few weeks, Clemson’s players — especially the freshmen — will have to adjust to juggling football and academics.
“We really have had control of their lives for the last two weeks here, so now we have to start balancing everything,” Swinney said. “But it’s good for them to get back in school. There’s a great energy on campus with all the students coming back.”
While the players go about their business on the first day of school tomorrow, Clemson’s coaching staff will prepare for Thursday’s scrimmage.
“Tomorrow is just a day for them to get re-acclimated to being a Clemson student,” Swinney said. “But it’s a big day for us as a staff for planning, preparation, final thoughts and personnel-type stuff as we come into this last scrimmage on Thursday.”
Following season-prep practices on Friday and Saturday, Clemson will turn its attention to Auburn starting Monday.
All in all, with fall camp in the rearview, Swinney is happy with where the team is.
“I’m proud of our guys,” Swinney said. “Proud of how they’ve competed and pushed through.”
