Former Tiger Brianna Rollins wins Gold

Former Clemson track star Brianna Rollins won the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles on Wednesday at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Rollins became the first Clemson female athlete in school history to win an Olympic Gold Medal as an individual and the first Clemson athlete to win won since Shawn Crawford won the men’s 200-meter in the 2004 Games.

The United States swept the podium in the 100-meter hurdles Wednesday night, with Rollins of course winning gold, Nia Ali silver and Kristi Castlin bronze. It was the first time the United States or any country has swept the medals in women’s track event.

“I’m just so excited. We came out here and did our best,” Rollins said on NBC afterwards. “We came out and got a sweep so I’m grateful to God.”

Rollins, who will turn 25 on Thursday won in a time of 12.48 seconds. Ali was second in 12.59 and Castlin finished third in 12.61.

Rollins is a two-time USA champion and 2013 World champion in the event. She owns the second-best time in the world this season at 12.34, and previously held the American record with a personal best 12.26.

Rollins won three NCAA titles at Clemson and set collegiate indoor and outdoor records in 2013. She earned a Clemson degree in December 2013, the same month she was awarded The Bowerman as the sport’s top collegiate athlete.
