Competition drives Williams to stay focused

As preseason camp comes to a close, Clemson tight end Garrett Williams was very pleased with the overall performance of the team over the last two weeks. Following Tuesday’s practice the sophomore seemed content with the way the offense concluded preseason camp.

“It was a good day today. I thought the offense did well most of practice. I thought it was a good way to finish off camp. It’s been a good two weeks,” he said.

As far as the progression Williams has made this summer, getting stronger was one of his biggest concerns. The tight end said he was able to gain some weight thanks to Clemson’s strength and conditioning coach Joey Batson.

“I have put on a lot of weight and have gotten stronger through Coach Batson’s weight program, so that’s really helped me,” the sophomore said. “When I came in here, I didn’t think I was big enough to dominate the blocking game yet. I still needed to mature and get better in that area as well.”

Wanting to improve his technique, William’s said his main focus was working on his receiving game.

“The biggest thing over the summer was, for me, and what all the coaches told me to work on, was my receiving game. So, I did a lot with Jordan (Leggett) and some of the receivers and Deshaun (Watson) on just how to run my routes and where to run my routes and just get familiar with catching,” Williams said. “I did a lot of that over the summer.”

Working with some of the best, the sophomore feels like he has made vast improvements since last season.

“There has been times where I struggled at camp, but I feel like overall, I am definitely  coming along,”  Williams said.

Now that the depth at tight end is the best it has been in a while, the competition amongst the unit has been a motivation to come out and perform every single day. Williams inferred that letting one practice slip by you could knock you down the depth chart fast.

“You can’t come out here and have an off day because you will just move down in the depth chart because guys are so good in our room,” he said. “You always have to be focused coming out here and perform every practice. It really helps you stay focused and driven.”
