After coming off a freshman season in which he caught 33 passes for 492 yards and five touchdowns. It is safe to assume Clemson’s Hunter Renfrow is feeling good about himself.
With one of those touchdowns being a 35-yard pass from Deshaun Watson in a win over Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff from the Orange Bowl, it is safe to assume Renfrow is on cloud nine.
Thanks to two touchdown receptions in the College Football Playoff Championship Game against Alabama, while leading the Tigers with a career-high seven catches for 88 yards, it might be safe to assume Renfrow is on top of the World.
Knowing all three of those assumptions, it’s safe to assume no one is higher on Renfrow than Hunter Renfrow. However, that is not the case.
“My thing right now is just being the best teammate that I can,” the sophomore said. “That’s all it has been about for me in high school and coming here last year.”
When he has placed personal goals for himself, Renfrow says it always goes south.
“It’s funny, whenever I try to get away from (the team aspect), I don’t play as well, but when I’m everything about the team, that’s how it is,” he said. “It can be distracting so you just try to be the best teammate you can and help the team win.”
Renfrow has done a great job of that. The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina native played a big role in the Tigers run to the national championship game last year, and now he and the Tigers have their eyes set on getting back there, and this time bringing the championship trophy back home.
“One of the greatest fears in life is the potential to be good so we actually have to be good and put in the work every day,” he said.
Clemson’s offense is expected to be very good. The Tigers return eight starters overall, including Heisman Trophy Finalist Deshaun Watson and 1,500-yard rusher Wayne Gallman. The Biggest addition to the offense this year is the return of All-ACC wide receiver Mike Williams.
Williams, 6-foot-4, 222 pounds, is considered to be one of the best wide receivers in college football this season.
“Getting Mike back this year is huge, but Charone (Peake) did a pretty good last year. He is doing pretty good with the Jets and had a touchdown the other night. Mike, he brings a different element to the game. He is pretty talented.”
Renfrow feels Williams’ decision to come back for another year sparked tight end Jordan Leggett and Gallman to also return. Like Williams, they too were eligible to enter the NFL Draft last January.
“They all came back. We are going to try and put together the best year Clemson has ever had and that starts in practice every day and getting better,” Renfrow said.
This summer, Renfrow said he worked harder than he did the year before and in camp he focused a lot on becoming a better blocker. He also has focused on being a better teammate and becoming more of a leader in situations when he can lead.
“We have great guys on our team that are willing to follow, but are also willing to lead when their time comes. We need that on our team,” he said.
When he thinks back to the 2015 football season, Renfrow does so with a slight smile and knows all of its success has played a big role in his confidence. However, he knows none of that will play a role in what happens this year.
“Yesterday’s touchdowns do not win the game today. That was last year,” he said. “This is a completely different year. There are different DBs out there … everything is different.
“The confidence is there, but you still have to go make the plays again.”
