It might not be game week just yet, but it is getting close.
Two weeks from today, the second-ranked Clemson Tigers will kick off the 2016 football season against SEC power Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama.
“It is about time. We have been playing each other the whole summer,” Clemson tight end Jordan Leggett said. “It is going to be good to see some other faces across the ball and actually get to go out there and compete.
“It is going to be fun. I’m excited.”
The Tigers, who advanced to the College Football Playoff Championship Game last January, began preparations for the Sept. 3 opener on Friday. Clemson will practice this afternoon as well as it transitions away from the way camp is run to a more traditional regular-season type of practice.
“It is going to change a lot because we have just been really all Clemson. Most of the practices have been all good on good,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said. “Now, as you shift gears, we will still have some what I call ‘fastball’ in there with skelly, team pass, inside and some one-on-one stuff, but we have not had scout teams so now we will start really preparing for the opponent.”
The Tigers’ opponent of course is Auburn, a team with a lot more unknown than known parts. Those Tigers still have not named a starting quarterback and after starting running back Jovon Robinson was dismissed from the team before camp started earlier this month, they don’t have a known running back either.
On defense, Auburn has a new look as former Clemson and LSU defensive coordinator Kevin Steele takes over for Will Muschamp, who is now the head coach at South Carolina.
However, despite all the unknowns coming out of the Auburn camp, all Swinney and his Tigers can do is prepare for what they do know.
“You are always preparing for your opponent when you are learning your system and things, but specifically your scout teams and the looks that we are going to prepare for,” he said. “Then there are the time changes, so you get into the 20-hour rule and you can’t practice as long. Your reps are different. You can’t rep three groups, you rep two groups, so those are probably the biggest differences.”
