What do we really know about Auburn? We know Gus Malzahn is an offensive genius and is the architect for Clemson’s power-spread offense, which his Tigers’ still run as well.
But from a personnel standpoint, what do we really know about those SEC Tigers? On the offensive side there isn’t much.
With two weeks before No. 2 Clemson invades Jordan-Hare Stadium for a nationally televised game on ESPN, Auburn still does not have a starting quarterback. John Franklin III, Jeremy Johnson and Sean White are still neck and neck as Sept. 3 approaches. According to an article written on AL.com, Malzahn seems to be in no hurry to name one either.
In the article, Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said all three quarterbacks are competing and taking reps but he did not indicate if one is taking more than the others or if all three were still getting the same about, which was the case when fall camp opened up earlier this month.
Last year, Johnson and White were both used but both struggled to be consistent. Franklin, who came in during the spring, is a junior college transfer who is considered to be one of the fastest players, if not the fastest on the team.
The 6-foot-1, 174-pound quarterback is said to have run a 4.28 in the 40-yard dash this past spring. In high school, Franklin was a state champion in the 4X100-meter relays and was a runner-up in the 100-meters. When he was at Florida State, Franklin was an ACC Champion on the 4X100 relay team.
On Friday, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said the Tigers were breaking into their scout teams and were beginning their game plan for Auburn.
But what can Brent Venables and the defense plan for right now?
Like the quarterback situation, who will be Auburn’s starting running back is just as cloudy. Before camp started, Malzahn dismissed the team’s starter—Jovon Robinson—for violating team rules. Then another back went down with injury, which leaves the team with three sophomores—Kerryon Johnson, Kamryn Pettway and Chandler Cox—and one freshman—Kameron Martin—competing for the job.
Johnson is the only one with any real experience, rushing for 208 yards and three touchdowns in reserve duty last year, while Cox is more of a fullback and will be Auburn’s H-back as well.
There are going to be a lot of late nights for the Clemson defensive staff over the next two weeks as they try to figure out who is doing what for Auburn and how Malzahn is going to try and use them all.
