Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney says defensive tackle Carlos Watkins will be ready to roll when the second-ranked Tigers travel to Auburn on Sept. 3 for the season-opener at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Swinney said the senior was back at practice on Monday and was going full speed. The Clemson coach also confirmed Watkins was wearing an air cast to protect his wrist, which he injured in practice last week. Watkins missed the last three practices prior to Monday.
Center Jay Guillermo said it was nice to have Watkins back at practice. He said the 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive tackle didn’t miss a beat with the cast on.
“He looked good. He was flying around today,” Guillermo said. “I know it is hard to come back after you have not done a whole lot. I did that during camp whenever I came back from my concussion. But he is a guy that works hard and no doubt he is going to be ready to go.”
Guillermo said he saw a lot of Watkins, Scott Pagano and Dexter Lawrence on Monday. The All-ACC center said in different periods he saw Watkins and Pagano and then will saw Pagano and Lawrence in others.
“They rotate them a lot,” he said. “It really just depends. There is not really a set order that I can see. There might over there, but there a few guys that are in that rotation.”
Obviously, it’s very important for a defensive tackle to be able to use his hands. Guillermo said Watkins was doing such a good job on Monday, he forgot Watkins had a cast on.
“He was good. Like I said, he came back out and practiced hard. He is going to get his feet back under him and a good thing it is happening now and he is trying to get back in the grove, instead of next week.”
O-Lineman goes down. Freshman offensive lineman Chandler Reeves (6-6, 270) might have torn his ACL on Saturday during a pass rushing drill. Swinney said the training staff thinks he tore his ACL, but they have not confirmed it.
“They never know until they get in there. When Byron Maxwell was here they thought he tore his ACL, but when he got in there, it was not torn,” Swinney said. “So MRIs are not always right or conclusive, but that is the initial thought … he tore his ACL so I really hate that. But it is better to do that now than in November. We will get started on the rehab and get that young man back and he’ll be better than ever.”
Edmond is back. Swinney said cornerback Marcus Edmond was back at practice on Monday. The redshirt junior missed all of camp and the last three practices after suffering an injury to his hamstring on the first day of camp.
“He has not really cut it loose in a while so we were really cautious with him today,” Swinney said. “He did some man-to-man and he did all of his individual work. Hopefully, each day he can push it a little bit more and more.”
It’s all Auburn. Swinney said practice is all about the Auburn Tigers this week.
“We are game planning from this point on. We will still have some good-on-good mixed into each practice to kind of keep everybody sharp and the speed of the game, kind of that fast ball,” Swinney said. “We still have a lot of work we have to get done against each other, but it is all game plan and really trying to get dialed in physically and mentally to get ready for this opponent.”
Clemson and Auburn will kick off at 9 p.m. on Sept. 3. The game will be televised by ESPN.
