No need to worry about defensive end

If you are worried about Clemson’s defensive ends, Dabo Swinney feels there is no need to.

Despite being down a starter with the loss of Austin Bryant for the next three weeks, the Tigers’ head coach likes what he has at his defensive end spots going into their season opener at Auburn on Sept. 3.

Christian Wilkins has moved out from his defensive tackle position to take over for Bryant, while Richard Yeargin and Chris Register both appear ready to step up and help with depth. Clelin Ferrell, a redshirt freshman, is expected to start at the other end position, while Jabril Robinson has moved from defensive tackle as well to provide more depth.

“That has been a great move for him,” Swinney said.

So has Wilkins’ move. Early reports, since he took over for Bryant last Tuesday, is that the sophomore has been unblockable. Concerns about him as a pass rusher seem to have faded as he is getting around the tackles and putting pressure on the quarterback on almost every snap.

He is also setting the edge in the run game, and has even dropped back into coverage a few times and held his own there, too.

“Moving Christian out there has been great. He has done a super job,” Swinney said. “He is really a natural. He can play there just as well as he does inside. He is a great football player.”

Swinney says being a little older and wiser has made a difference for Wilkins.

“When you come in as a true freshman, you are still learning, whereas now he knows what he is doing. He has just a high level of confidence about everything that he does,” Swinney said. “Then he can move. He is a big ole guy, but he is in a lot better shape than he was this time last year. Not that he was in bad shape, but his body has matured as well and he is going to have a great season, do doubt.”

The Clemson head coach is also very confident in Ferrell, who probably would not have redshirted as a true freshman had he not injured his hand.

“I think Clelin Ferrell is a very talented freshman that has not played a snap, but we are glad we have him,” Swinney said. “He is getting ready to get some experience, and I think he will get better each and every quarter and each and every game. I really do.”

Another guy the Clemson coaches are high on is Yeargin. He came on in the Orange Bowl last year and proved he can hold his own in a big-game atmosphere.

“Richard is a guy that has some experience, but he is a completely different guy then he was this time last year,” said Swinney. “He is 260 pounds, strong and more knowledgeable. And with that comes confidence. He is doing an excellent job.”

How about Register, a four-star talent that came to Clemson as an outside linebacker before asking to be moved to defensive end last year?

“Chris Register, ya’ll have heard me brag on many times, one of the most improved guys we have,” Swinney said.

Now you get an idea on why Swinney isn’t too worried.
