Brother of Trayvon Mullen seeing recruitment take off

In October, Coconut Creek (Fla.) cornerback Tiawan Mullen was without a scholarship offer. Now, he has five of them, with many more to come.

Though he is only a sophomore in the 2019 class, schools are recognizing the talent Mullen possesses. And as a result, his recruitment has taken off.

The Clemson Insider spoke with Mullen, the younger brother of Clemson freshman cornerback Trayvon Mullen, about his recent success in recruiting and more.

“It’s a blessing to be receiving those offers,” Mullen said. “I just thank the man above and keep working hard every day.”

Mullen was first offered by Middle Tennessee and Mississippi State on Nov. 8. Michigan State extended an offer on Nov. 30, and Kentucky and Louisville followed suit yesterday.

The 5-foot-10, 160-pounder finished his sophomore season with 45 tackles and six interceptions, including three that he returned for touchdowns.

“My strength as a player is speed, being physical and smart at the game,” Mullen said. “I can improve in weight but I feel like I can do more improving with my strength.”

In addition to the schools that have offered, Auburn, Mississippi State, Rutgers, Oregon State and a few other schools are showing interest.

Mullen would love to hear from Clemson in the future.

“Yes, they are a school I’m hoping (offers) down the road,” Mullen said.

What would an offer from the Tigers mean to Mullen?

“It would mean a lot,” Mullen said, “because my brother plays for them.”

There is a lot Mullen likes about Clemson.

“I like the atmosphere. It’s fantastic,” Mullen told TCI in November. “They are welcoming, treat you just like family, and the stadium is great.”

Mullen is also hoping for offers from Florida, Florida State, Miami and Oklahoma.

Mullen has of course kept up with his brother’s play at Clemson this season, and he thinks Trayvon is doing a fine job.

“I think my brother is doing great,” Tiawan said in November, “because when he gets in he makes the best of it and makes plays for his team.”

Clemson will face formidable competition in the College Football Playoff, but Tiawan likes the Tigers’ chances of taking home the national championship trophy.

“100 percent,” he said. “They have a great coaching staff and some fantastic players.”
