For just the fourth time since he took over as Clemson’s head coach in 2010-’11, the Tigers have won five straight games under head coach Brad Brownell.
Clemson won its fifth straight game on Tuesday with 93-65 victory over SC State at Littlejohn Coliseum. Jaron Blossomgame led the Tigers with a season-high 29 points, the third time this season he scored 22 or more points in a game.
Tuesday’s win over SC State marked the second straight game Clemson scored 90 or more points in a game. The Tigers defeated Mercer 90-47 on Saturday, and has won the last three games by at least 28 points.
The Tigers (7-2) had 17 assists and only two turnovers in the 28-point victory.
“It was another good offensive performance,” Brownell said. “Certainly, the 17 assists and two turnovers were a big stat as well as the 23 offensive rebounds. I knew, especially when they went small and played with five guys that were 6-4 and smaller we could hurt them inside.”
With its size advantage, Clemson outscored the Bulldogs 52-28 in the paint and used those 23 offensive rebounds for a 28-6 advantage when it came to second-chance points.
Point guard Shelton Mitchell finished with 14 points and five assists, while Donte Grantham added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers. Avery Holmes had 10 points.
SC State (2-8) hung with the Tigers for a little while in the opening half as Clemson led by just nine points at the beak. Despite seven first-half turnovers, the Bulldogs shot 50-percent from the field on 14 of 28 shooting.
“They were hard to guard for us individually. I thought they hurt us one-on-one and scored on us and made some tough shots, but the (Eric) Eaves kid was really good today and they made us work into the second half before we could pull away,” Brownell said.
SC State finished the game with 18 turnovers, which led to a 29-4 Tigers’ advantage off turnovers.
Clemson led by just 10 points with 15:46 to go following Eaves layup for SC State that made the score 51-41 at the time. But a 7-0 run by the Tigers followed by a 9-2 run a few minutes later allowed them to pull away in the second half.
“Our offensive efficiency was good. We probably took one too many threes, but other than that, I thought we played well and I thought that was the difference in the game,” Brownell said.
Speaking of efficiency, Blossomgame added nine rebounds and four assists to his 29 points and had no turnovers. The senior also was 10-of-16 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the foul line. He also had his best night of the season from behind the arc, making two of his four three-point attempts.
Sidy Djitte scored eight points and was 4-for-5 from the field, while adding a game-high 13 rebounds. Eaves led SC State with 20 points, while Riley Tashombe scored 14 points. Greg Mortimer tallied 13 points for the Bulldogs.
The Tigers will get the next three days off before playing at Alabama on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
