Foster soaking in Shrine Bowl experience

ROEBUCK, S.C. — Clemson commit Justin Foster is having a ball as he prepares to play in the prestigious Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game that will take place at Wofford College on Saturday.

Foster and the other players participating in the 80th annual Shrine Bowl have been practicing at Dorman High School in Roebuck, S.C., this week, and after Wednesday morning’s practice, The Clemson Insider caught up with Foster.

“It’s going good,” Foster told TCI. “It’s been fun, playing with the best people in North Carolina. So, it’s a fun time, fun time at practice and just enjoying ourselves.”

Of course, the Shelby (N.C.) Crest High School four-star linebacker is looking forward to competing in the game that features the best players from North Carolina and South Carolina. But even more so, Foster is enjoying the company of the players he will compete with and against.

“I’d say meeting all the players from around here (is my favorite part) because once we leave here most of us are going off to college, and some of us won’t ever see each other again,” Foster said. “So, it’s good to meet them.”

Foster, who committed to Clemson in October, is a versatile weapon off the edge. Clemson plans to utilize Foster as a hybrid linebacker slash stand-up defensive end, and the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder will be deployed in similar fashion during the game on Saturday.

“I’m playing buck linebacker, which is around the same position I played in high school,” Foster said. “So in the game I’ll be mostly rushing off the edge, dropping back in the flats a little bit. So, I’ll just try to use my skills off the edge most of the time.”

Foster, Clemson’s single representative in the Shrine Bowl this year, will also partake in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Similar to the Shrine Bowl, Foster is excited to build relationships with some of the nation’s future stars at the event.

“It’s people from around the country that are going to big schools, so you get to meet them and have a good time practicing together,” Foster said. “You’re practicing with the best of the best.”

Foster is enjoying himself as he gets ready for the Shrine Bowl. But with that said, his sights are still set on a win.

“Just my team playing hard,” Foster said, “and coming out with a victory.”

Foster, a top-100 prospect in the 2017 class, visited Clemson for the S.C. State, N.C. State and South Carolina games this season. He will take his official visit in January.
