Clayton: ‘I have dreamed of playing baseball at Clemson’

Clemson head coach Monte Lee and the Tigers picked up a commitment on Sunday night from York (S.C.) 2019 right-handed pitcher Nick Clayton.

Clayton chose Clemson over East Carolina and South Carolina.

The Clemson Insider caught up with Clayton shortly after he announced his decision on Twitter.

“I’ve been praying and talking it over with my family for two to three weeks,” Clayton told TCI, “and yesterday my family and I sat down and we all agreed that Clemson was the best place for me.”

Clemson offered Clayton in early December.

Clayton said Clemson has been his dream school since he was a child.

“Ever since I was a kid, I have dreamed of playing baseball at Clemson,” Clayton said. “I first started talking with them in September after a tournament. The next weekend I went down for a visit and just fell in love with the campus and facilities.

“I have developed a great relationship with the coaches. So when they offered me a scholarship I knew that Clemson was where I wanted to be.”

The 6-foot-4, 170-pounder feels his strengths as a pitcher are commanding the strike zone and controlling a game.

“I have good command of my pitches and have the ability to move in and out of the zone,” Clayton said. “I work ahead most of the time.”

How does Clayton see himself fitting in at Clemson in the future?

“I am going to come in and work as hard as I can, and just try and compete for the weekend rotation,” Clayton said. “I want to be the best player and teammate I can be and will do anything to help the team win.”
