Second-ranked Clemson continues the grit and grind of its college football playoff preparation as the Tigers wrap up their first week of practice before facing No. 3 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona on New Year’s Eve.
On Monday, the media spoke to many players including linebacker Ben Boulware, defensive tackle Carlos Watkins, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, and quarterback Deshaun Watson as part of media day at Clemson for the Fiesta Bowl.
As the Tigers travel down the road to the playoffs, they reflect on their enjoyable season and spoke on their eagerness to return to the playoffs.
Here is what we heard.
Lawrence said Ohio State’s offensive line is one of the best the Tigers have seen thus far.
“They’re definitely big and strong guys up there. They have pretty good technician, so it’s going to be a good match-up,” Lawrence said.
Wilkins credited their success to their athleticism and quick-reaction movements.
“They’re a physical bunch, and they move really well. I think the biggest thing is their movement and athleticism. When it’s on, you’re going to have to be quick,” Watkins said.
Ohio State is a team that doesn’t focus on down-field throws as much as the run game. Lawrence is ready for that challenge.
“We love being physical,” Lawrence said, “so they can bring it.”
Appearing in back to back college football playoffs, Clemson was able to gain playoff experience that Boulware and Watkins believe will impact the game.
“The thing with last year… the coaches knew what to do but they were unaware and didn’t really know in some areas. But going back to back, we’re a lot more comfortable, we’re definitely a lot more acclimated to the situation, especially coaching wise,” Boulware said.
“I think the experience was big for us,” Watkins said, “I feel like guys that had the experience last year should know what it’s going to take to win it this year.”
Although the road to the playoffs is a long ride, the Tigers still find ways to have fun.
“You find ways to have fun in certain areas on the bus, at the movies, or at dinner. You find ways to have fun at practice, too. You gotta be out there so you might as well make the most out of it,” Boulware said.
Watson agrees and adds the Tigers are able to have fun because the team understands what they need to do to be successful.
“It’s been a fun team to play with. All the guys understand what we’re about and what we need to do to achieve our goals and that’s what we’re doing each and every day,” Watson said.
As Watson reflected on his team and season, he said that each and every player always had a great attitude, no matter the circumstance.
“It’s been an enjoyable season. Each and every day we don’t have any problems. No one comes in with an attitude or negative energy. We always come ready to play, ready to put in the work,” Watson said.
Physically, mentally, and emotionally, Boulware assures Clemson fans that himself and his teammates are eager for this challenge in facing Ohio State.
“I feel great. All of our guys feel really good. Kudos to our strength staff and coaching staff. I think at all three levels, mentally, physically, and emotionally, we’re eager for this challenge,” Boulware said.
