Fiesta Bowl: Jay Guillermo unplugged

As second-ranked Clemson continues its College Football Playoff preparation, the team’s starters met with the media to discuss the upcoming matchup against No. 3 Ohio State.

During the session, the media spoke to senior center Jay Guillermo where he talked about the Tigers’ success after their loss to Pittsburgh, the Fiesta Bowl and his comic relief role on the team.

Question: What did you learn from the third-and-one and the fourth-and-one against Pitt that you guys couldn’t convert? How did that push you guys going forward?

Guillermo: “I don’t think we really had to learn anything it was just two plays we just didn’t get. It hurt and we moved on from it. But it’s not like no one blocked on the play. Stuff happens. We didn’t let the loss define our season. I’ve been proud of the team for how we’ve bounced back ever since then.”

Question: You’re about to go against one of the best defensive lines in the country and you guys have kind of changed some things on the fly with some parts here and there. How do you feel about that?

Guillermo: “Any time you can get in this spot and go against a good defensive line, you’re always excited. Those guys are explosive, they can move well, their defensive ends can come out and play interior, they can play end. They’re really, really good. They got depth, too. Quality depth. It’s going to be tough for us but I feel like we go against a really good defensive line every day. That will really prepare us for what we’ll be able to face. It lets us gauge what we can do and what we can’t do.”

Question: I’ve heard you’re a sense of comic relief on the team. Is that true?

Guillermo: “Yeah, I do all my imitations and I’ll pick one person normally that I can just rag on. Like Sean (Pollard) or Tyrone (Crowder), I like to pick on those two. One liners, anything I can think of, it’s coming out. There’s no filter.”

Question: So like a mini roast?

Guillermo: “Basically. We always said that we needed to have a mini roast with Coach (Robbie) Caldwell and let all the offensive lineman get up there. Or let us do all the coaches. I don’t think the couches would like us very much after that.”
