Bockhorst talks Under Armour All-America Game experience

Clemson commit Matt Bockhorst would have loved to play in the prestigious All-America game he was invited to. But physically unable to perform, Bockhorst didn’t let what he couldn’t control deter him from having fun at the event.

Bockhorst joined fellow commitments Tee Higgins, Amari Rodgers and A.J. Terrell as Clemson’s representatives at the annual Under Armour All-America Game, which took place on Sunday at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

Bockhorst arrived last Tuesday and stayed through the end of the week. The four-star offensive lineman from St. Xavier High in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the other invitees stayed busy on the field and off it.

“We went to an Orlando Magic game, went to Hollywood Studios and went bowling,” Bockhorst said. “Going bowling was definitely interesting because when you put 100-plus guys in a bowling alley, things are bound to get out of hand, and they did.”

After suffering a tear of his ACL and meniscus at The Opening Finals training camp in July, Bockhorst’s rehab is progressing well and his knee is feeling good. The 6-foot-5, 295-pounder is running at 75-percent bodyweight and is on track to run at 100 percent soon. The next step after that is multi-directional training.

Though his injury prevented him from playing in the Under Armour game, which features 115 of the nation’s top high school seniors, Bockhorst didn’t let it put a damper on his experience.

“It was a great experience,” Bockhorst said. “Obviously I wasn’t able to play, but going to events like the Under Armour game are awesome because you get to meet the other guys who are in similar positions as you, and you develop relationships that last for a lifetime. Being in Florida for a week wasn’t bad either.”

While watching the other players practice during the week and play in the game, Bockhorst was engaged and observant.

“Most of the coaching was focused on the scheme side of things, since the guys had to learn a whole playoff in four days,” Bockhorst said, “but whenever I watch other guys, I try to pick up on different techniques they use and eventually try those things myself to see if they can benefit my game.”

Bockhorst is set to make his official visit to Clemson from Jan. 13-15, and he will sign with the school less than a month later.

He enjoyed spending time with some of his future teammates at the Under Armour game, and can’t wait to get on campus with Clemson’s 2017 class in the future.

“I think I can speak for all of the guys when I say that I am getting very excited for the future,” he said, “and having guys like that in this recruiting class is what makes it special.”
