Clemson target talks transfer to IMG

Last week, Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes four-star linebacker Charles Thomas announced he will transfer to powerhouse IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) for his final two years of high school.

There, he will join 2018 Clemson linebacker commit Mike Jones, 2018 five-star defensive end Xavier Thomas, 2018 four-star wide receiver Brian Hightower and 2018 five-star defensive tackle Taron Vincent as the IMG attendees with Clemson offers.

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Thomas about his decision to change schools.

“It feels great,” Thomas said of joining the school. “I just want to get there and help the team any way I possibly can.”

Thomas, who received an offer from Clemson last June, said he mulled over the opportunity with his family before concluding that IMG is the best place for his development as an overall student-athlete.

“My family and I sat down and weighed out the pros and cons of attending IMG, and the pros outweighed the cons drastically,” Thomas said. “IMG gives me the opportunity to be prepared for college academically and athletically.”

As a sophomore in 2016, Thomas totaled 132 tackles, three sacks and an interception after recording 102 tackles as a freshman. Along with Clemson, the top-100 prospect in the 2019 class has offers from Auburn, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia among others.

The 6-foot-1, 213-pounder last visited Clemson in October for the Tigers’ game against N.C. State and said he plans to visit again “as soon as possible.”

“I am looking forward to seeing the new facilities,” Thomas said.

Thomas doesn’t know Jones personally, but is excited to work with him in IMG’s linebacker corps as well meet the rest of his teammates.

“I look forward to getting to know everyone on the team,” he said.

Thomas, the No. 12 prospect in Georgia and the nation’s No. 4 inside linebacker according to 247Sports, can’t wait to get to work at IMG and improve his game in preparation for the next level.

“I’m looking forward to IMG and competing with some great athletes,” Thomas said. “I know the competition and training there will improve my game.”
