Clemson has a new assistant coach.

No surprise, head coach Dabo Swinney has hired within to fill Dan Brooks spot on his staff. According to several sources, The Clemson Insider was able to confirm that Mickey Conn has been promoted to co-defensive backs coach.

Sources tell TCI, he is already on the road recruiting for Clemson this week. Conn came on Swinney’s staff in 2016 as a defensive analyst coach. Conn replaced former defensive tackles coach Dan Brooks, who informed Swinney of his plans to retire last week.

Conn and Swinney go way back. The two were teammates on Alabama’s 1992 National Championship team. Conn is a 1993 Alabama graduate and he spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at ‘Bama before making a name for himself as a high school coach in Georgia.

Conn started the program at Grayson High School in 2000. In his 16 years leading the Rams, he record one 137-48 record. He took Grayson to seven region championships in his 16 years there. His teams won at least 10 games in eight of his last nine seasons at Grayson including a 13-1 record in 2015 when Grayson reached the semifinals of the state playoffs.

In 2011, Grayson won a state championship under Conn’s leadership. He had Clemson players Wayne Gallman, Nick Schuessler and defensive back Ryan Carter on that team.
