Newly offered 4-star on Clemson: ‘I’m definitely really interested’

Clemson has closely tracked and shown considerable interest in Big Stone Gap (Va.) Union four-star tight end James Mitchell for some time, and on Tuesday night, he received an offer from the Tigers.

Clemson recruiting coordinator Brandon Streeter attended Mitchell’s basketball game last night and delivered word of the offer to his coach.

“Coach Streeter was actually down for my basketball game tonight,” Mitchell told The Clemson Insider moments after he announced the offer via Twitter on Tuesday night. “I didn’t get to talk to him, but it was relayed through my coach.”

What did Mitchell, a top-250 prospect in the 2018 class, hear about the offer from his coach?

“He just told me that coach Streeter wanted me to know I got an offer from Clemson, and they were really interested in me, and how big-time it was,” Mitchell said.

In-state schools Virginia and Virginia Tech were first to offer the 6-foot-4, 210-pound standout last February and March, respectively, before Duke followed in July and Vanderbilt in September. Tennessee was Mitchell’s most recent offer on Jan. 3.

Mitchell made his first game visit to Clemson in 2015 for the Florida State contest. He returned for the Dabo Swinney camp over the summer and also witnessed Clemson’s thrilling win over Louisville in October. During Clemson’s bye week later that month, Clemson assistant Danny Pearman attended one of Mitchell’s games at Union.

“Just blessed really,” Mitchell said of the offer from Clemson. “Glad to have an opportunity to possibly play there.”

Mitchell is set to visit Clemson again later this month for Junior Day.

“Yes, January 28th,” Mitchell said. “I’m really interested to learn more about the academic side, and just getting to know more about what they do.”

Mitchell told TCI last month that Clemson, Virginia Tech and Duke are recruiting him the hardest.

He isn’t sure when he will commit, and said he doesn’t have any leaders at this stage of his recruiting process. However, Clemson is in a good position right now.

“I don’t have any leaders,” Mitchell said, “but I’m definitely really interested.”

Rivals.com rates Mitchell as a top-250 prospect nationally and the No. 11 prospect at his position. He was named player of the year in his conference by the league’s coaches as a junior this season.
