Visit from Venables ‘meant a lot’ to coveted 4-star corner

Among the recruiting stops Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables made in Florida on Tuesday of this week was a visit to American Heritage High in Plantation, Fla., where he met with prospects including four-star cornerback Tyson Campbell.

The Clemson Insider caught up with Campbell, who received his first offer from Clemson in October 2015 and now has more than 15 in total as a junior.

“It meant a lot,” Campbell said of Venables visiting, “knowing that I must be high on their board.”

Campbell, who is rated as a top-100 prospect and top-15 cornerback nationally in the 2018 class, is a target of many major programs. The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder cites offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Tennessee among others.

Clemson is one of the schools recruiting Campbell the hardest, along with Georgia, Alabama, Miami, Ohio State and LSU.

What did Campbell hear from Venables during their conversation?

“That he wants me to come up there,” Campbell said.

Campbell said he will “most likely” attend Clemson’s Junior Day this month.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the campus,” Campbell said, “and meeting the coaches.”

Last month, Clemson defensive backs coach Mike Reed also made a trip to American Heritage to check in on Campbell.

Campbell told TCI afterward that he could picture himself playing under Reed at Clemson.

“I like that he has a winning attitude,” Campbell said of Reed, “and I could see myself playing for him.”

Clemson remains in the lead group for Campbell with schools such as Georgia, LSU, Ohio State and the Florida schools.

Campbell said he plans to make a number of visits over the offseason, but didn’t name specifics.

Campbell helped American Heritage win the Class 5A state championship this season. He is rated by 247Sports as the No. 94 overall prospect in the 2018 class and the country’s No. 13 corner.
