Clemson recruiting: Latest news and notes surrounding the Tigers

The Clemson Insider rounds up the latest recruiting news and notes surrounding the Tigers:

Offers out. Clemson has offered six prospects from Texas in the 2018 class, with five being defensive backs and one being a four-star safety that received his offer on Monday. Cypress Springs safety Leon O’Neal announced the offer from Clemson, which joined schools such as Alabama, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M on O’Neal’s offer sheet. The No. 141 prospect in ESPN’s Junior 300 garnered one of his first offers from Texas A&M and most recently visited the school for its Junior Day, and the Aggies made a marked impression. Though the Texas schools loom large, O’Neal has conveyed that there’s a lot of things he wants to consider and a number of schools he wants to visit before potentially beginning to move toward an early decision.

Clemson extended an offer to another safety yesterday in Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep Institute four-star Isheem Young. Young, who is rated as a top-75 prospect by 247Sports and a top-150 prospect by Rivals, cites over 20 offers including ones from Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. One would think the Big 10 schools are major players here, but expect Clemson to get consideration and at least a visit. Young told TCI shortly after Clemson’s offer yesterday that it “means a lot to get offered by the No. 1 school in the country/2017 national champs”. The comment is more evidence that Clemson’s national brand is as strong as ever after the national title.

Date set for Etienne. Jennings (La.) four-star running back Travis Etienne, the top remaining 2017 target on Clemson’s board as it stands now, announced yesterday evening that he will commit at 5 p.m. CT on Thursday. We’ll get you set with a recap of the most notable events in Etienne’s recruiting process leading up to the announcement:

Etienne, the No. 113 prospect in the ESPN 300, committed to Texas A&M in June before de-committing two months later. LSU offered Etienne in late December shortly after losing out to Florida State for Clinton (Miss.) five-star running back Cam Akers. Clemson offered on Jan. 12, and Dabo Swinney went in-home for a visit with him four days later. Etienne then opted to take an official visit to Clemson with his parents last weekend after originally planning to use the official on Texas A&M. Fresh off of a national championship and with Dabo’s World ready to show off, Clemson made a strong impression and gave him a lot to think about. LSU countered with an in-home visit to Etienne on Monday, and that’s where we stand now.

Etienne also officially visited Tennessee in mid-January, but his decision has come down to Clemson and LSU. After contemplating an official visit to LSU this weekend, Etienne has already made up his mind following the in-home visit from LSU this week, and it could be a reflection of the direction he is leaning. However, the early decision date could also be an indication that Clemson hit a home run with Etienne during his official and he saw no need to take one to LSU. The smart money is on LSU, the in-state school that instantly emerged as a frontrunner for Etienne after offering. But Clemson’s brand is a powerful one right now, and the Tigers have more than a fighting chance.

Etienne will announce his commitment on Twitter.
