How does Clemson get nation’s best prospects? Simple it tells the truth

Brandon Streeter just finished coaching the greatest quarterback, and arguably the greatest player, in Clemson history in Deshaun Watson. It is easy to think it will not get any better than that for the Tigers’ quarterback coach, right?

Watson did just lead Clemson to a national championship. He was a two-time Heisman Trophy Finalist, a two-time All-American and became the first quarterback in the history of college football to win both the Davey O’Brien and the Manning Awards in back-to-back years.

And though it is doubtful anyone can do better than what Watson accomplished in his three years at Clemson, they can definitely match it.

Clemson appears to be loaded with quarterback talent for several years to come with the guys currently on the roster and others on the way.

Heading into National Signing Day next Wednesday, the Tigers already have two former four-star quarterbacks—Kelly Bryant and Zerrick Cooper—and one five-star—Hunter Johnson—on the roster with another four-star committed to sign next Wednesday in Chase Brice.

There is also former three-star prospect Tucker Israel, and by the way, the No. 1 quarterback and overall prospect for the 2018 Class, Trevor Lawrence, is also committed to Clemson. Those are six quarterbacks that have all been at the top of their respected classes that will all get an opportunity to lead the Tigers in the near future.

How will Clemson keep them all happy?

“That is something that I think about a lot, but it really comes down to, and first-and-foremost, we are going to go and try and get the best guys out there,” Streeter said. “I can’t ever imagine any of our coaches on our staff or any coach on any other staff, and I don’t want to talk for the other staffs out there, but we would not be very smart if we did not try and go get the best.

“In the back of your mind, you wonder how it is all going to turn out, but I really and truly believe that it does go back to the culture.”

That culture is Clemson’s belief that the best is the standard everything you do. Not just on the football field, but in the classroom, in the community and in everyday life. Clemson also prides itself on its family atmosphere. They just don’t preach it, but they live it. Whether its community projects they do together as a team or its “Family Night” on Wednesdays, they always do it together.

In everything his program does, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is about putting these three things in the proper order for his players – faith, family and then football.

When Swinney told his players at halftime in the national championship game against Alabama that they were going to win the game because of “Love,” he meant it. He felt they were going to win because each guy in that room loved and respected the other guy so much that they were not going to lose the game and let that guy next to them down. And he was right.

“That’s why you don’t see much turnover at all at Clemson when it comes to guys transferring,” Streeter said. “That’s because when they get into our program and are interwoven into our program, they see there are so many other things, other than football, that attract them to Clemson.

“I really believe that is a big factor and that is a factor we feel confident in and keeping guys and retaining guys. Yes, they want to play so we have to be creative on how we present it and when they get here make sure they have an opportunity.”

The biggest factor in all of it, Clemson will not lie to a recruit to get him to come to Clemson.

“It is simple. We are so upfront and honest with these kids,” Streeter said. “Everybody is going to have an opportunity whether they are a walk on, it does not matter what size they are, if they are the best one, then they are going to play. They all understand that coming in.

“With all of this social media stuff out there, these kids know the roster more than we do, I think. It is unbelievable … so the best thing to do is to be upfront and honest with them and that is what we do. We tell them exactly what we think and what opportunities they are going to have. That is the easiest way to sell it.”
