Big Stone Gap (Va.) Union four-star tight end James Mitchell, who received an offer from Clemson in mid-January, returned to campus this past weekend for Saturday’s Junior Day.

It marked his fourth visit to the school after attending the Florida State game in 2015, the Dabo Swinney Camp last summer and the Louisville game in 2016.

“It was really good being back up there, it was a really good day,” Mitchell told The Clemson Insider. “It’s always good getting up there though.”

Mitchell has long been on Clemson’s radar, and the staff has evaluated him live on several occasions. Clemson tight ends coach Danny Pearman paid Mitchell a visit during the Tigers’ bye week in October.

Mitchell, who is rated as a top-250 overall prospect by Rivals and a top-200 prospect by 247Sports, said he enjoyed an extended opportunity to speak with Clemson’s coaches.

He was also intrigued by Clemson’s new football operations facility, especially the PAW Journey part of it, a special section devoted to helping players develop the skills they need to be successful in life after football.

“I liked getting to interact with the coaches more. On game days you don’t get as much time with them, so I liked that,” Mitchell said. “And I thought PAW Journey was very interesting, and that whole program stood out to me.”

Mitchell introduced himself to Swinney during the visit, and said he talked to Pearman and recruiting coordinator Brandon Streeter the most.

“I’d say the thing I heard the most was how genuine the people at Clemson are,” he said, “and how they’ll prepare you to win on and off the field.”

In-state schools Virginia and Virginia Tech were first to offer the 6-foot-4, 210-pound standout last February and March, respectively, before Duke followed in July and Vanderbilt in September. Tennessee had been Mitchell’s most recent offer on Jan. 3 prior to the offer from Clemson on Jan. 17.

Based on his conversations with Clemson, Mitchell believes he would be utilized much like Jordan Leggett was during his career.

“Probably the same way they used Jordan Leggett,” he said. “Very versatile being able to work with your hand down, in the backfield or split out with the WRs.”

Coming up for Mitchell is a couple of visits to Duke this weekend and Tennessee in March.

Where do the Tigers stand with him right now?

“Well I don’t have a list yet,” Mitchell said, “but I am very impressed with Clemson.”

Mitchell hopes to release a list of his top schools before his senior season.
