Senior Salute: Wayne Gallman

The list of Clemson’s greatest running backs in history includes some prolific names.

Terry Allen graced the field from 1987-1989 and went on to have four 1,000-yard seasons in the NFL. A more recent legend, C.J. Spiller, became a top-10 draft pick after having record-setting performances while wearing the Tiger Paw.

After his last three seasons of impressive performances, running back Wayne Gallman has also left his mark on the Clemson record books.

Gallman came into Clemson as 247 Sports’ No. 18 running back in the nation, but didn’t truly make a name for himself at Clemson until the 2014 season. However, once he did, his name became one that will forever be tied with being a key factor in the Tigers’ winning the National Championship in 2016.

After redshirting his freshman year with former high school teammate Ryan Carter, Gallman played his first career game as a Tiger at Georgia on August 30, 2014 where he recorded a five-yard carry and two receptions for 17 yards. About two months later, the star broke through to earn ACC Rookie-of-the-Week honors after racking up a game-high of 101 yards on 28 carries in Clemson’s victory over Syracuse.

From that game on, Gallman became the unwavering starter for the Tigers. He ended the season with a team-high of 769 yards and four touchdowns on 161 carries in addition to 24 receptions for 108 more yards and a score.

While the 2014 season shined a light on Gallman’s talents, it was the 2015 season that truly showcased him. As a redshirt sophomore, Gallman ran all over the field, setting the single-season rushing record at Clemson with his 1,527 yards and 13 touchdowns. He added another score with his 21 catches for 213 yards all while playing a crucial role in getting the Tigers to the title game.

His 1,740 total yards even surpassed Spiller’s 2009 record of 1,715 yards. Gallman also added to the record books by going over the 100-yard rushing mark nine times that season.

After the success he had in 2015, Gallman could have easily decided to leave Clemson early and enter into the 2016 NFL Draft, but his time at Clemson was not done. Gallman decided to stay and graduate with a degree in Communication Studies, while also earning a national championship trophy.

In Clemson’s national championship season, Gallman tacked on five more 100-yard games, breaking the record for career games of over 100-yards with 17. In those 17 games, Clemson also went undefeated. He ended the season with 1,133 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, one of which he scored in the title game against Alabama.

Although he has one season left of eligibility due to redshirting, Gallman entered the 2017 NFL Draft to extend his talents to the professional level. And while he may have only been on the field for three seasons, his 3,429 career yards leave Gallman ranked among the top five in Clemson history while his 34 rushing touchdowns rank the Clemson graduate in the top three in school history.
