Country’s No. 2 RB talks Clemson, upcoming visit

Clemson will welcome the country’s No. 2 running back in the class of 2019 back on campus next month.

Stafford (Va.) North Stafford four-star running back Devyn Ford is set to make his third trip to Clemson on March 4 after first visiting last July and last visiting for the Louisville game in October.

The Clemson Insider caught up with Ford, who said a few people will accompany him.

“My father and maybe my mom or godfather,” Ford said, “and two of my teammates.”

What is he looking forward to seeing?

“Just a fun atmosphere,” he said, “and the feeling of family.”

Ford is also excited to check out the newly completed football operations facility.

“I haven’t seen much because I’ve only seen the construction before they finished,” Ford said, “but I heard there are some nice pools and sleeping areas.”

Clemson offered Ford last April following his freshman season when he rushed for 1,865 yards and 24 touchdowns. The second-ranked running back and No. 12 overall prospect in his class according to 247Sports has nearly two dozen offers heading into his junior season, including ones from Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Auburn, Michigan, Penn State and Tennessee.

Ford said Clemson and Ohio State are two of the schools he’s hearing the most from. He recently attended Ohio State’s Junior Day on Jan. 28.

“Ohio State was good,” Ford said. “I did enjoy it.”

As far as Clemson, Ford was impressed by the program’s national title.

“It’s great now that they’ve established that they can beat a team like ‘Bama,” he said. “The coach must have to be good, now more recruits are interested plus.”

A couple of things stand out to Ford about Clemson overall, including the offense that he feels could be a good fit with his skillset.

“One thing I like about Clemson is their offensive scheme, with the tosses and sweeps and read-options,” Ford said. “It is mainly 10-personnel spread, but they have inside zone and running backs catch the ball out of the backfield.”

“I admire Wayne Gallman a lot,” he added, “because I feel like I’m going to be a lean 195, almost 5’11. Maybe 6’0 or 6’1.”

It’s too early in Ford’s recruiting process for him to name any leaders.

“Everyone’s still pretty equal right now,” he said.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder has an idea of when he might make a decision in the future.

“I’m thinking mid-junior year, like around January or February,” Ford said. “Depending on my season and how it goes I’ll probably announce my commitment, but if I don’t then I’ll do it mid-season of my senior year.”

Ford is teammates with Clemson 2018 offensive tackle target Nana Asiedu at North Stafford.
