When he first got the head coaching job at Clemson back in 2009, Dabo Swinney went up to Hampton, Va., and asked a highly recruited quarterback by the name of Tajh Boyd to come to Clemson and help him build something special. Boyd accepted and thus began what has now become one of the top programs in college football.

Boyd was a part of Swinney’s first recruiting class, a class he affectionately named “The Dandy Dozen.” Those 12 signees laid the ground work for what the Clemson football program has become today.

Since Boyd, Swinney and his coaching staff has delivered one simple message, while racking up seven top 15 classes in a row, including six straight top 10 classes, which includes a couple of top five classes. The most recent class, which had just 14 signees (the smallest since Swinney’s Dandy Dozen) ranked No. 10 nationally according to ESPN.

“The message is come be great,” Swinney said. “Come be a part of something special. We lay it out, this is who we are and this is the way we do things. Come and be a part of it. We just buy into the overall daily grind of what we do and how we do it here at Clemson.”

Over the years, that message has not change, despite the fact Clemson has won 70 games in the last six seasons, three ACC Championships, six straight 10-win seasons, five bowl victories, two College Football Playoff appearances, two national championship game appearances and one national championship.

“It really has not changed much, it has not had to,” Swinney said. “Certainly, winning the national championship that’s really … I mean we had a lot to sell. It’s not like … We have done everything multiple times. We have had a lot to sell to these guys, especially academically to go along with the success on the field. So now winning the (national) championship, I think, just makes the conversation even better, but it has not really changed a whole lot.”
