Instant Replay: Wright State 9, Clemson 2

The Clemson Insider takes a look back at Clemson’s 9-2 loss to Wright State on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium to drop their season opening series.

What happened?

The Raiders (2-1) took an early lead in the second with a RBI double and two-run homer that went off the glove of KJ Bryant over the fence. The Tigers (1-1) cut into the deficit as Seth Beer homered off the batter’s eye to make it 3-1. Wright State then slowly kept putting insurance runs on the board as they scored two in the fifth, single runs in the seventh and eighth, and two runs in the ninth to make it 9-1. Clemson would get a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Logan Davidson solo homer but the Raiders still took the weekend series with the win.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the second inning. With Wright State already holding a 1-0 lead, Seth Gray launched a ball to center field that it looked like Bryant had a beat on. However, as Bryant hit the wall, the ball went off of his glove and over the wall for a two-run homer instead of what would have been the third out of the inning. The Tigers never really recovered as they never got closer than two runs the rest of the game.

What went right?

Beer continued his hot start with his second homer of the weekend while reaching base three times in the game (a HBP and drawing his sixth walk of the season). Davidson capped off the weekend with his first career long ball. Jacob Hennessy bounced back with a nice outing, recording four strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

What went wrong?

Starter Alex Eubanks had a rough first outing, allowing five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings (but did record six strikeouts). Offensively, Clemson could never get anything going as they only had six hits and struck out 10 times while stranding seven runners.
