Spring Preview: He’s just not the Grocery Store Kicker

The Grocery Store Kicker is now one of the more experienced kickers in the ACC. Former walk-on Greg Huegel returns for his third season at Clemson.

Last year, the rising junior made 14 of his 19 field goal attempts, including a long of 46 yards which came against Florida State and Syracuse.

The 46-yard attempt at Florida State was one of the biggest of his career. At the time, it gave the Tigers a 29-28 lead with 5:25 to play in the game. It turned out to be the difference in the game when Clemson later scored a touchdown and a got a two-point conversion for a 37-34 lead with 2:06 to play in the game.

During his freshman season Huegel connected on a Clemson record 27 field goals as he finished the 2015 season 27-of-32 including a career long of 47 yards.

The Blythewood, S.C. native struggled with PATs during his freshman season as he missed five of his 62 attempts. However, this past year, he improved, just missing two of his 71 attempts.

Alex Spence: He did not attempt a field goal attempt in 2016, but he did kick the ball of seven times. He had seven kickoffs for 427 yards with one touchdown back. His kicks traveled for an average of 61 yards. He has kicked just once in a game, making an extra point against Wofford in the 2015 season opener. Spence was a Shrine Bowl kicker in high school at West Florence. He was also the Class AAAA Specialist of the Year. He was rated as the No. 34 kicker in the country by ESPN coming out of high school.

Christian Groomes: The local kicker from nearby Daniel High School does not have a career field goal, but he has two career kickoffs, one in each of the last two years. He had one kick this past season that traveled 65 yards in the air.
