The Clemson Insider takes a look back at Clemson’s 3-0 win over Elon on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium to complete the three-game series sweep.
What happened?
After both starting pitchers controlled the first four innings, the Tigers (5-2) broke through with two runs in the fifth inning. Patrick Cromwell led off the inning led off the inning with his first career home run and Clemson added a run on a two-out wild pitch to plate Robert Jolly. The next inning, the Tigers struck again as Logan Davidson led off with a walk followed by a Grayson Byrd double before another wild pitch brought Davidson in to make it 3-0. The Phoenix (3-4) had the tying run at the plate in the eighth inning with no outs but reliever Jacob Hennessy struck out three straight batters to end the threat. Again in the ninth, Elon brought the tying run to the plate with only one out but Hennessy induced a fly ball and groundout to end it and give Clemson the three-game sweep.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game had a couple of key moments. Offensively for the Tigers, it came in the middle innings as they plated three runs on three hits over two innings to give Alex Eubanks all the support he would need. On the mound, Hennessy shut down two late rallies by the Phoenix to preserve the win.
What went right?
Eubanks (7.0 scoreless innings, 3 hits, 7 Ks) and Hennessy (2.0 scoreless innings, 2 hits, 4 Ks) were almost dominant on the mound and kept the Elon hitters off balance all day. Robert Jolly continued his hot hitting, leading all batters with two hits while Cromwell showed a flash of his power. Defensively, the Tigers made a couple of different web gems in the field to complete a solid day on the diamond.
What went wrong?
It’s hard to find much wrong when a team completes a three game sweep. The Tigers struggled to pick up some key hits throughout the game as they tallied on six hits on the afternoon while stranding 10 runners. Despite some web gems, Clemson did have one error on a dropped fly ball but Eubanks pitched around it.
