On a cold Wednesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Yale jumped to an early lead, but Clemson rallied for a 10-8 win to sweep the two-game series with the Bulldogs.

The Tigers won their eighth straight game with 10 hits on the afternoon. Chris Williams went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Chase Pinder went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jordan Green went 2-for-2 at the plate.

Paul Campbell got his first start of the season. He went he three and a third innings and gave up three hits, four runs and four earned runs. Alex Schnell came in to relieve of Campbell in the fourth but quickly ran into trouble.  He walked two, hit a batter and gave up one run.

Jeremy Beasley relieved Schnell in the fourth and pitched outstanding going three and 2/3 innings, giving up no hits and no runs.

Yale scored five in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Back-to-back singles and then a walk loaded the bases for the Bulldogs with not outs. Schnell came into relieve Campbell with one out. Two walks, a hit batter and catcher’s interference later and the Tigers trailed 5-0.  Beasley relieved Schnell and got the final two outs to end the damage.

“Well we fell behind early in the game,” Clemson head coach Monte Lee said. “We gave up five runs in the fourth. We struggled to throw strikes in that inning. I think we had six free in that inning.”

Clemson got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Pinder reached on a throwing error that pulled the first baseman off the bag. Reed Rohlman flied out deep to the warning track. Seth Beer hit a line drive to center for the second out. Chris Williams hit a two-run home run to left center and the Tigers cut the deficit to 5-2.

With one out in the sixth Logon Davidson singled. Jordan Greene singled down the right field line advancing Davidson to third. Patrick Cromwell grounded out to second scoring Davidson.  Pinder singled down the left field line scoring Greene. Weston Jackson pinch hit for Reed Rohlman and hit a two-run home run to left to put the Tigers on top 6-5.

“Chris Williams came up with a big two-run homer to get us on the board and then Weston Jackson with a big one as well to make it 6-5,” said Lee.

Yale jumped on top with two runs in the top of the eighth.

“We got into the eighth and we had an error, a couple of miscues and gave them their second big-inning of the day,” said Lee.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth Greene walked and then Cromwell was hit by a pitch. Pinder singled to center to score Greene.  Jackson walked to load the bases for Beer.  Beer hit a long sacrifice fly to center to score Cromwell to tie the game. Chris Williams doubled down the left field line to score Jackson and Pinder. After eight innings, the Tigers led 10-8.

Clemson moved to 14-3 with the victory. The Tigers host Virginia for a three-game series this weekend at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Game One is Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
