One of nation’s top DEs commits to Clemson

Snellville (Ga.) South Gwinnett four-star defensive end Justin Mascoll committed to Clemson on Friday night.

Mascoll, one of the nation’s top defensive ends and a top-100 overall prospect in the 2018 class, chose Clemson over Auburn, Florida State, Georgia and others among his two dozen offers.

“I just want to thank God and my family for being there for me through this long process and I just want to thank all of my coaches that have pushed me to be great on and off the field and I just want to thank all the coaches that have recruited me through this whole process but my recruitment process has ended and I’m %100 #ALLIN,” Mascoll said in a tweet announcing his decision.

Clemson was the first school to offer Mascoll before his freshman year. Alabama, Florida, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska and Notre Dame are some of the other prominent programs he held offers from.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder recently attended Clemson’s junior day on March 4 after previously visiting for the Tigers’ game against South Carolina last November. He also took in Clemson’s spring game last April.

Mascoll is rated by Rivals as the nation’s No. 3 weak-side defensive end, No. 11 prospect in Georgia and No. 84 prospect regardless of position. He had 68 tackles and six sacks as a junior in 2016.

He becomes the sixth member of Clemson’s 2018 recruiting class, joining Richburg (S.C.) Lewisville defensive tackle Josh Belk, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy linebacker Mike Jones, Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe wide receiver Derion Kendrick, Cartersville (Ga.) quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Central (S.C.) Daniel linebacker Jake Venables.
