MT. PLEASANT, S.C. — The Clemson Insider looks back at Clemson’s 8-4 win over the College of Charleston on Tuesday night at Patriots Point.
What happened?
The Tigers (17-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Chris Williams hit a solo homer down the left field line. The Cougars (8-13) answered in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot of their own to make it 1-1. Clemson took the lead for good in the third as Chase Pinder doubled down the right field line, moved up on a fly ball, and came in to score on a wild pitch. The Tigers added to their lead in the fourth as Williams hit another solo shot and, following a single by Andrew Cox, Logan Davidson hit a two-run homer to make it 5-1. College of Charleston cut the lead to 5-3 with two runs in the fifth but the Tigers answered right back in the sixth as Weston Jackson had a pinch-hit RBI single to stretch the lead back to 6-3. After the Cougars plated a run in the seventh to make it 6-4, Clemson added a run on a wild pitch in the eighth and Seth Beer launched a solo homer in the ninth to cap it off and give the Tigers their 12th straight win away from home.
Game-Changing Moment:
The game changed in the fourth inning as Clemson gave themselves some cushion courtesy of the long ball.
What went right?
The Tigers used the long ball to generate their offense as they scored five of their eight runs on homers. Williams continued his hot hitting with a team-high two hits while Davidson added two RBI. Eight different players had hits while six scored a run. On the mound, Tyler Jackson turned in another effective start to earn his third win while it was good to see Ryley Gilliam return from his injury to pick up his second save.
What went wrong?
Overall, the Tigers played a solid game all around. They did struggle to build some innings as they only had one inning with multiple hits.
