The Clemson Insider looks back at Clemson’s 2-0 win over Boston College on Sunday afternoon at the University of Rhode Island’s Bill Beck Field.

What happened?

Both teams traded zeros on the board for the first seven innings as each starting pitcher was in the zone, creating a classic pitcher’s duel. The Tigers (20-4, 8-1 ACC) finally broke through in the eighth. Logan Davidson drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Following a Robert Jolly single that put runners on the corners, Reed Rohlman hit a sac fly to plate Davidson and give Clemson a 1-0 lead. The Eagles (7-14, 1-8 ACC) threatened in the bottom of the frame as they loaded the bases with one out, but Tiger closer Ryley Gilliam shut down the threat. Clemson added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Seth Beer solo homer and swept the three-game series with a 2-0 win.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the eighth inning. Following seven scoreless innings, the Tigers manufactured a run on a walk, wild pitch, hit, and sac fly to break the 0-0 tie. Boston College seemed like they may answer, loading the bases on two singles and an error but Gilliam recorded a strikeout and fly out to end their threat.

What went right?

Clemson pitching was outstanding again, posting their second consecutive shutout. Starter Pat Krall allowed seven hits with three strikeouts in 7.1 innings to earn his fourth win, while closer Gilliam did not allow a hit with a walk and three strikeouts in 1.2 innings to pick up his second save. Five different Tigers (Chase Pinder, Beer, Andrew Cox, Jolly, and Rohlman) each had a hit while Rohlman and Beer drove in the two runs.

What went wrong?

The offense struggled to pick up hits for the second straight game, with only five in the contest. Defensively, Clemson played well and avoided what could have been a costly error in the eighth.
