Fifth-ranked Clemson earned its third straight shutout for the first-time since 1992 with an 8-0 victory over Furman on Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson. Clemson pitching has now recorded 28 straight scoreless innings.
The Tigers have won seven straight games.
“We have pitched very well all year,” Clemson head coach Monte Lee said. “I think what you are seeing is guys are starting to get more accustomed to their roles and the expectations on the pitching staff are so high right now and the competitive level between the pitchers.
“Every guy that comes in there, he knows what the standard is and he wants to come in there and try to stay in the ballgame because we have some many options out of the bullpen so those guys don’t want me coming out there so they are really, really competing regardless of the score.”
Clemson’s Tyler Jackson earned the win on the mound, while right fielder Weston Jackson hit two runs and was 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs at the plate. Right-hand pitcher Ryan Miller and lefty Mitchell Miller came in and finished the final 2 1/3 innings.
“They know with the strength of our bullpen that if I get an opportunity to come into the game tonight, I need to throw well,” Lee said. “I just think the standard right now for our bullpen and our starters is so high and they are competing against each other and just doing an unbelievable job. Coach (Andrew) See, you have to give him all the credit. He has done an unbelievable job developing our pitchers and developing that standard of excellence.”
Tyler Jackson went 6 2/3 innings for the Tigers on Tuesday night, giving up no runs, while scattering five hits. He also had four strikeouts and walked just one batter.
“We work our butts off all throughout the week so we are prepared and when guys throw in games like that, you just want to do just as good or better,” Jackson said. “You just want to go out and keep the ball rolling.”
The Paladins (11-12) had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the second inning, but Jackson got Dillon Love to strike out swinging and Jake Crawford to ground out to third base to retire the side.
In the fourth inning, Jabari Richards singled through the left side and stole second base with two outs, but Jackson got Sims Griffith to ground out to short to end the inning.
In the top of the seven inning, Crawford doubled to left center field with two outs, but Ryan Miller came in and got Carter Grote to strikeout looking to end that scoring opportunity for the Paladins. That was their final one of the night.
Clemson took an early 1-0 lead over Furman on Tuesday evening when Weston Jackson doubled to center field to score Andrew Cox in the bottom of the second inning.
Cox lead off the inning by drawing a walk to get on base. He advanced to second by stealing as Logan Davidson struck out, looking. Jackson then came to the plate with one out and nailed a double to send Cox home, putting the Tigers on top of the Paladins in the second inning.
The Tigers extended their lead over Furman in the bottom of the fourth inning when Grayson Byrd singled up the middle to score Logan Davidson to put the Tigers up 2-0 with two outs. Davidson lead off the inning with a single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Byrd then stepped up to the plate after two consecutive outs and nailed a single to center field, allowing Davidson to cross home plate.
Clemson (21-4) added two more runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. After Clemson’s first two batters of the inning got out, Jackson hit a solo home run to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Reed Rohlman was up at bat after Furman had a pitching change, and he was able to draw a walk. Grayson Byrd then singled down the left field line to advance Rohlman to second. Jordan Greene stepped up to the plate and nailed a single through the left side to score Rohlman.
Jackson hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 7-0, while Seth Beer hit a solo homer in the eighth to right field for the 8-0 lead.
The Tigers will host Winthrop on Wednesday with first-pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
