ATLANTA — To win at Georgia Tech a team usually needs to bring the bats and No. 5 Clemson did that on Friday night. The Tigers won their ninth straight game as they put up 11 runs on 18 hits and defeated the Jackets 11-6.

Charlie Barnes earned the win for the Tigers going 5 2/3 innings and giving up six hits, three runs and three earned runs. Patrick Andrews was strong in relief going 2.1 innings and only giving up one hit and no runs. Alex Schnell struggled through the ninth to close it out.

Clemson took the lead in the top of the third. Grayson Byrd hit his first career home run, a solo shot to right field to lead off the inning.

The Jackets bounced right back and tied the game in the bottom of the third inning, but the Tigers broke the game open in the top of the fourth with five runs. With two outs Reed Rohlman singled to start the two-out magic. Jordan Greene singled and Byrd walked to load the bases. Chase Pinder walked to score Rohlman, and  Logan Davidson singled to score Greene and Byrd for a 4-1 lead.

Seth Beer walked before Chris Williams singled to score Davidson and Pinder. The Tigers led 6-1 after the top of the fourth.

Clemson added some insurance in the sixth inning. Byrd singled and advanced to second on Pinder’s sacrifice bunt. Davidson singled to score Byrd. Beer then doubled to left field and Davidson scored all the way from first. Andrew Cox singled to center to score Beer and the Tigers led 9-1.

The Tigers added two more runs in the top of the ninth. Greene hit a lead-off single. With one out Pinder singled and Beer walked with two outs before Williams doubled to score Greene and Pinder.

Clemson moved to 23-4 overall and 9-1 in the ACC with the win. The Tigers and Jackets play Game 2 on Saturday at 4 p.m.
