Saturday’s Orange & White Game in Death Valley was a defensive struggle, but their were still a few big plays on both side of the line. He are a few of the players that stood out in the Orange team’s 19-14 victory over the White.
Tucker Israel
Yes, Israel will more than likely not be the No. 1 guy this year, but he had the best Spring Game statistically of all the quarterbacks. He completed 13-of-19 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown as well as nicely avoiding some pressure in the pocket.
Fans probably forget about him even though he has been here for just as long as Kelly Bryant and while he most likely won’t get too many snaps this year, can provide some valuable leadership off the bench.
Cornell Powell
Replacing some of top wide receivers in college football will be a tough task, but Cornell Powell can make that process a little easier this year. His stats weren’t anything special, but Powell caught four passes for a team leading 45 yards. While Hunter Renfrow should technically get the Helmet Sticker at wideout, we all know what he can do, and Powell comes in as a guy that has a lot of untapped potential. This could be a breakout season for him in a young receiving core crowded with plenty of talent.
Zerrick Cooper
It’s only fitting that two QB’s get a sticker in this game, especially with the big duel over who will replace Deshaun Watson. Cooper was a bit of a surprise, not because he doesn’t have the skills or potential, but because most of the talk has been between Kelly Bryant and Hunter Johnson. Cooper finished the Spring Game going 11-of-18 for 81 yards and an interception while showing off his legs a little bit with five carries for 26 yards. The stats are nothing special, but as the game went on he looked more comfortable in the pocket than any of the other quarterbacks. This just makes things more interesting going into summer camp.
Shaq Smith
There aren’t many big or unusual questions about the defense going into next season, especially compared to the offense, but there will be some shuffling around in the linebacker core. Smith had a solid Spring Game, flying all around the field totaling up 10 tackles, including one for a five-yard loss. The redshirt freshman came out of IMG Academy as the No. 3 linebacker in the country last year and possesses the size and speed (6-foo-2 240 pounds) to have a big impact this year depending on his ability to fully learn playbook and read the offense.
