Instant Replay: Clemson 6, Virginia Tech 3

The Clemson Insider looks back at Clemson’s 6-3 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

The Hokies (17-16, 6-8 ACC) got off to a quick start, scoring two first inning runs on two hits and an error. The Tigers (27-5, 12-2 ACC) answered in the fourth with a three-run inning. Reed Rohlman led off with a solo homer to cut the lead in half then Seth Beer was hit by a pitch and Chris Williams doubled off the right field wall. Logan Davidson tied the game with a sac fly before Jordan Greene hit a two-out single to give Clemson a 3-2 lead. Virginia Tech tied the game in the sixth on solo homer but again Clemson answered in the bottom of the frame. Davidson drew a leadoff walk, moved up on a sac bunt followed by a wild pitch, and came in to score on a Drew Wharton RBI single. The Tigers added two big insurance runs in the seventh as Beer launched a leadoff home run and Davidson, who reached on a single, came in to score on a wild pitch to give Clemson the 6-3 lead.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changed in the sixth inning. The Hokies went to the bullpen to start the inning and Davidson immediately drew a leadoff walk. The Tigers played some small ball, using a sac bunt and wild pitch to move Davidson to third before Wharton gave Clemson the lead for good with single up the middle.

What went right?

Alex Eubanks pitched an effective 7.0 innings while Tyler Jackson and Ryley Gilliam each tossed scoreless innings. Rohlman continued his hot hitting with three hits (two doubles and a homer) while Beer, Wharton, and Greene each had two hits in the 11-hit attack.

What went wrong?

The Tigers had a couple of errors and battled through a tough first inning. Clemson also stranded 10 runners in the game, missing a couple of chances to either take the lead or add to their lead later in the game.
