Nunez on commitment: ‘I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity’

Lawrenceville (Ga.) Collins Hill shortstop Nasim Nunez had just gotten off the team’s bus after one of his games in February this season when his head coach told him that he received a message from Clemson head coach Monte Lee.

“I was like what does he want with me?” Nunez recalled during an interview with The Clemson Insider. “He was like he wants you to give him a call tonight.

“I called coach Lee that night at like 9 o’clock, and he said we want to get you up to Clemson as soon as possible.”

He visited Clemson three days later, and the rest is history.

Nunez, a 2019 prospect, announced his commitment to Lee and the Tigers on Saturday.

“When I got there, I just loved it,” Nunez said. “I loved the whole thing about Clemson. It’s amazing. It’s beautiful. I love the people there, and I love the coaches and the program.”

Nunez said Lee was thrilled when he informed him of the commitment.

“Coach Lee was very excited when I told him about it,” he said.

“I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” he added.

Clemson assistant coach Bradley LeCroy attended Collins Hill’s game against Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) in early March and liked what he saw from Nunez.

“When coach LeCroy came to watch one of my games, that’s when I hit one of my first triples of the season,” Nunez said. “Coach LeCroy said he likes my hands and my pitch selection.”

Nunez (5-9, 145) also had an offer from Alabama State. Alabama, Florida State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt were showing interest.

Clemson is recruiting Nunez as a “shortstop only,” he said.

He has also visited Florida State and had scheduled visits to South Carolina and Vanderbilt, but won’t make those trips now.

Nunez couldn’t be happier to be a Tiger.

“It feels amazing,” he said. “It’s just a relief that after all the hard work I went through, sweat and tears, I finally got to what I wanted to do. Now I just have to keep working, keep developing skills and stay strong.”
