A couple of talented teammates from St. Vincent Pallotti High in Laurel, Md., were paid a visit by Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables and defensive line coach Todd Bates on Monday, the first day the Tigers’ staff hit the road during the ongoing spring evaluation period.
The coaches went to look at 2020 prospects Blake Corum, a running back, and Coziah Izzard, a defensive end/outside linebacker. Though they are only freshmen, the two already have more than a dozen scholarship offers between them.
Izzard, who was first offered by Maryland five games into his high school career, spoke with The Clemson Insider and said he appreciates the coaches coming by.
“It really means a lot to me being visited by the national champs,” Izzard said, “and it makes me feel like I’m going to be a part of something big.”
Izzard talked briefly with the coaches, who told him they would like to see him back on campus for the Dabo Swinney Camp in June. He and Corum attended Clemson’s junior day on March 4.
“They really enjoyed seeing me and they want me to come to the camp this summer,” Izzard said. “Also that they will be back soon to check back on me and other players.”
At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Izzard already looks the part of a college football edge rusher. He is a gifted athlete with length and explosiveness to go with his frame.
After receiving the offer from Maryland in September, Izzard collected offers from Buffalo, East Carolina, Michigan State and Wake Forest over the next several months.
Along with the Tigers, coaches from Pittsburgh, N.C. State and Penn State have made their way to St. Vincent Pallotti thus far this spring evaluation period, which began on April 15 and runs through May 31.
Izzard visited Maryland for its spring game last Saturday and hopes to visit the other schools that have offered, this summer. He said he will “most definitely” camp at Clemson this summer, as well.
Having visited Clemson and gotten a visit from the coaches, what stands out to him the most about the program?
“The coaches really stand out to me because I really like them, and having them visit me means a lot,” Izzard said. “Just having the coaches there visiting me makes me want to be a part of Clemson.”
